Used Cars That Are Too Good To Be True!
May 25th, 2008
We have all been in the used car market trying to buy the best car for the least amount of money. We are constantly looking for a car that is under priced but is in immaculate condition. Once and a while we find that person trying to get rid of their car for an incredible price; is it to good to be true?
One of the first things that can pull a cars value down is whether or not it has been totaled or salvaged due to a severe accident. How can you tell if the used car that you want to buy has serious frame damage? Let’s look more closely at this aspect of buying a used car, and hopefully you can learn a few things to help you avoid the lemons.
So, how do you tell if this car is a golden deal or a lemon? Well, the first thing that I would look at even before looking at the car is the title. If the car has been in a bad accident or if the mileage has been tampered with you can normally tell by looking at the title. If the seller won’t let you see the title, or if he can’t find it, then I would begin to become suspicious.
Another scenario is this one; they will have had a new title made for the car. Many times they say that the original title was lost and so they had to get a new one. Sometimes this may be true, but many times it is just an easy way to hide the information that was on the original title.
Believe it or not, but I was fooled with one car seller. I looked at this truck and really liked it. It had less than 100,000 miles on it so I thought that the sale price was very cheap. He gave me his word that the miles were actual and that it was just a bit dirty. WARNING, it’s not just dirty it is used! And has been used for a whole lot more then the miles, or seller are telling you.
I was young and naive so I bought the car. I enjoyed it and it worked just fine for me. Two years later I was tired of it and wanted to buy a sportier car. So, I listed it in the paper to see if I could sell it for around what I owed on it. I had many people interested in it and in fact the first person to look at it agreed to buy it. He took the VIN and some other information and told me he would bring a check the next day.
In fact it was to easy! The buyer called me back within a few hours. He told me that he couldn’t buy the truck for that price. I was a little mad, as we had already bargained and decided on a fair price. He further explained that he did a search on the internet to locate any information that he could for that VIN. It showed up as having 100,000 more miles on it then what the odometer read. At this point I was beyond shock, I was extremely mad! I couldn’t believe that they guy who sold it to me had lied to me.
So, what did I do? I lowered the price and explained to the people that I wasn’t sure about the miles. I didn’t get nearly the money I was hoping for, but I did learn a lot about buying a used car.
If you are unsure about the car that you are considering to buy, then check it out online. The technology that we have today is incredible, and we should use it to the best of our ability. It can save us a lot of money at the same time.
Let’s continue thinking about this topic and consider this as you go. If a deal seems to good to be true; it normally is! Now if you are buying from your uncle Henry or someone that you know you can trust that is a different story. Otherwise I would proceed with caution. I hope that you all find your dream car for the price that you want. It is possible, just keep hunting!
